Impact of the Care Quality Commission on provider performance

Published jointly with Alliance Manchester Business School, a major evaluation of the first five years of the CQC’s inspection and rating regime recommends that CQC focus less on large, infrequent inspections and more on regular, less formal contact with providers.

We have developed a framework of eight different ways in which inspection can have an impact on providers, beyond a simple response to regulator directives. We found the nature of relationships between inspection staff and provider staff was a key determinant of impact, as was the capacity of providers to respond and the external support available to help them do this.
